Kelley Suttenfield is a vocalist in the neo-classic jazz tradition,
delivering soulful interpretations of lyrics over a smooth, swinging beat.
With a diverse repertoire ranging from Brazilian standards to the Beatles
and beyond, Kelley’s music is known for creating an evocative mood that
clearly resonates with her audience. Kelley performs regularly in New York
City and, on occasion, her former stomping grounds in Virginia, as well as
overseas in Copenhagen, Denmark.
She received a mention in Volume IV of the World Who’s Who in Jazz,
Cabaret, Music and Entertainment (2007), was a finalist in the
NYC Jazzmobile Jazz Vocalist competition (2008), and has just released a new
CD on Rhombus Records entitled: Where Is Love? (2009).
Her love of music was apparent at an early age. Growing up in Virginia, she performed
as a soloist in school and church choirs, and won multiple state
classical piano competitions. Before long, she was regularly appearing in community musical theatre productions. She also lent her voice to regional
radio advertisements and appeared in the NBC mini-series "The Murder of Mary Phagan." Later, while earning dual degrees
in theatre arts and psychology, she garnered leading roles in university
productions. But ironically, it was while studying classical voice that
she became enamored with jazz.
After relocating to New York City, she studied jazz interpretation with
Jimmy Sigler, bebop with the
Barry Harris workshop, and vocal technique
with Phil Campanella, and Barbara Maier. Lately she has had the
opportunity to study with recording jazz vocalists
Roseanna Vitro,
Tierney
Sutton,
Kate McGarry, and in workshop settings with
Ann
Hampton Callaway,
Janis Siegel,
Laurel Massé,
Jay Clayton,
Mark Murphy,
and Judy Niemack.
Kelley has been featured at such venues as
Caffe Vivaldi,
Greenwich Village Bistro,
Kavehaz,
Mannahatta Lounge, Maroons, Tagine,
Varjak, The Duplex,
and Starbucks, as well as guest appearances at
55 Bar, Anyway Café, CB’s
Gallery, Charley O's, Cleopatra's Needle, Chez Suzette, Corrado Café 68,
Le Biarritz,
North Square
Lounge, Porter's, Showman's

and has been known to swing by Copenhagen, Denmark where she has appeared at
Christiania Jazz Club, the
Library Bar at the Sofitel Hotel, La Fontaine Jazz Club, and
Jazzhuset
Vognporten. She has just returned from a music-filled week in New
Orleans where she appeared as a guest at The Bombay Club and her new
favorite "home-away-from-home" The Spotted Cat.
